According to greek mythology, its name derives from one of Hercules’ deeds. In particular, the killing of the lion that lived on the peaks of mount Kitheronas.
According to the myth, Hercules killed the lion with a huge club made of strong wood, called “koutali”, which he brought to the area that was named Koutala.
Koutalas Monastery was a sacred place of worship from ancient times. Built in the 15 th century -a period of woe and despair for the greek people due to the Ottoman occupation.
Despite the lack of money and resources the builders’ craftmanship and dexterity created an imposing architectural structure. Set in beautiful mountaineous landscape connecting you with nature with plenty of surrounding picnic tables and easy hiking trails for you and your family to enjoy.
